Overview

Google Opal is a no-code AI app creation platform from Google Labs. Launched in the US in July 2025 and expanded to 160+ countries by late 2025, Opal lets users build working AI-powered mini-apps and multi-step workflows without writing code. Describe what you want — a data extraction tool, a research assistant, an internal Q&A bot — and Opal uses natural language to connect Google AI models like Gemini with your specified inputs and logic, producing a working app. In February 2026, Google added agentic capabilities to Opal, turning it from a static workflow builder into a goal-driven platform. The upgraded agent understands your objective, selects the right models automatically, sequences actions, and prompts for clarification when needed. Opal can search the web for context, review internal documents, and process user data within pipelines. It targets marketers, HR teams, startup founders, and researchers who need to prototype AI tools without developer resources. Currently free as part of Google Labs' ongoing beta.

How It Works

You start a project by typing what you want to build in plain language. Opal interprets your intent and selects the right Google AI models and workflow steps. Before the February 2026 agentic update, you had to specify each step manually. Now, the integrated agent handles the planning: it assesses your goal, picks the right models, sequences actions, and asks for clarification when instructions are ambiguous. Workflows can include live web search, document review, data extraction, content generation, and multi-step automation. The built-in agent flags missing inputs before starting so it doesn't fail midway. Finished apps can be shared as standalone links or embedded in existing workflows. Because Opal is a Google Labs product, it integrates natively with Workspace apps, Gemini, and Google Search.
